10 ways to better manage stress before an important Presentation

Writer: Karan MathurKaran Mathur

The build-up towards an important presentation is stressful for most of us. However, it is self-induced, and we can take back control with simple tricks like getting a good night's sleep, breathing, and exercise.

It's just gone past 6 pm. Your biggest sales pitch is in the morning. How should you spend the next few hours?

A. Work on more slides

B. Go out for a party

C. Unwind and Calm yourself

The answer is C - Unwind and Calm yourself. The precious hours, before your big presentation, are to reset the body- both physically and mentally. Here are 10 ways you can better manage stress, especially before an important presentation:

Learn to Detach

While presentations are all about practice, it's equally important to detach and take a break from the content. This will help your mind relax. Distract yourself with a healthy alternative. Water the garden, take out the old telescope, or reorganize the wardrobe. Watch a movie or a show that gives you a nice laugh and puts you in a positive state of mind. Try Vogue's list of "best soothing" movies which includes Julie and Julia, Tarzan and Hairspray. I recently discovered a Youtube channel called "OmniHour" with beautiful drone films and nature videos. Check out this video called Europe from Above - very relaxing!

Stop Worrying

You have done everything possible to prepare for the presentation. Obsessing over every detail and worrying about "what ifs" are not going to help. Be confident in your abilities.

Nourish the Soul

Get a healthy, nutritious dinner that has the right balance of carbs, fat, and protein. My own favorites are Wild Salmon Salad or a simple Roast Chicken. Both are easy to prepare and delicious and pair well with a glass of wine.

Get Organized

Set out your clothes for the morning. Check if anything needs to be ironed. This simple and basic ritual helps prevents early morning panic.

Shut Eye

Don't underestimate the power of a good night's sleep. Sleep actually helps in both learning and memory, improves mood, and is great for our physical health. Try using essential oils like Lavender that can help you relax. Don't forget to set your alarm for the morning.

Morning Jumpstart

Start off your morning with a short yoga session. Check out this easy-to-follow 30 minute Yoga session from Fit Tuber. This routine offers a nice variety of cardio, deep breathing, and meditation.

Follow this with a healthy breakfast. I stick to my breakfast favorites - cereal with cold milk, fresh fruit, and a cup of green tea!

Practice

It's time now to go through your presentation. Do a full run-through and allocate a bit of time for any last-minute tweaks or amends.

Warm-Up

Spend a few minutes warming up your vocal cords with a few simple exercises. These will help improve the quality of speech and even your tone.

Check all settings

Settle into your workspace 15 minutes before the start of the meetings. Check your webcam and mic functions and ensure the screen share is working properly.

Showtime

Give yourself a pep talk. You got this!

Be the first one to connect (if it's an online call) and greet all the attendees with great enthusiasm. Energy is infectious!
